In the Arab world, a surprising trend is making headlines: more and more young people are choosing not to get married. This growing “marriage phobia” is becoming a big topic of discussion, especially after a recent viral photo showed three girls holding a sign asking men to marry them.
Statistics show that in countries like Lebanon, 85% of people over 30 are unmarried. In Iraq, it’s 70%, and in Egypt, 8 million youth are single due to marriage phobia. Even in wealthy nations like the UAE, around 150,000 men and women remain unmarried. Only Palestine has a low rate, with just 8% of people staying single.
Why is this happening? Experts say there are many reasons. Economic problems, wars, and high costs of living make it hard for young people to afford marriage. Many also want freedom, education, and careers instead of settling down. Women, in particular, are choosing independence over traditional family life.
Social media and changing attitudes are also playing a role. Young Arabs are breaking away from old traditions and making their own choices. However, this shift is causing debates, especially in conservative societies where unmarried women face criticism.
This trend shows how the Arab world is changing, with youth rethinking marriage and its place in their lives.
