Social worker Vishu Shetty has set an example of humanity by reuniting Satinder Singh, a recovered mental health patient, with his family in Kolkata.
Singh, who came to Udupi for work, faced severe mental health challenges that led to distressing behavior, including attacking passers-by near Kalpana Talkies. Concerned locals filed complaints, prompting Shetty to intervene. During the rescue, Singh exhibited alarming actions like trying to swallow an iron object and threatening self-harm.
With the community’s help, Shetty admitted Singh to Baliga Hospital for treatment. The hospital successfully stabilized him, after which Singh shared his family’s contact details and expressed a desire to return home. Singh’s wife, unable to travel due to childcare responsibilities, requested help in sending him back safely.
Demonstrating extraordinary care, Shetty escorted Singh to Mangaluru railway station, arranged a train ticket, and provided Rs 7,500 for his journey. The hospital treatment, costing Rs 9,600, was supported by donations, with donor Girish contributing Rs 7,000 and Shetty covering the rest.
This compassionate act, supported by social activist Harish Udyavar, has been widely praised, showcasing the power of community and kindness.
