In recent years, Türkiye has witnessed a sharp rise in autism diagnosis, with numbers jumping significantly due to increased awareness and early screening programs. According to Dr. Ece Gültekin, a child neurology specialist, autism rates have seen a 316% rise from 2000 to 2020. In 2000, 1 in 150 children was diagnosed with autism, whereas by 2020, this figure had reached 1 in 36.
The Ministry of Family and Social Services’ Autism Spectrum Disorder Action Plan (2023–2030) highlights that better access to screening tests and increased societal awareness have played a crucial role in this rise. Early screenings between 18–24 months can detect autism early, providing children with opportunities for timely intervention.
Dr. Gültekin explained that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects brain signal transmission, leading to differences in communication and learning. Early intervention, such as speech and occupational therapies, can greatly improve the social and cognitive skills of children with autism.
She also emphasized that factors like genetic conditions, environmental pollution during pregnancy, and older parental age might contribute to autism. However, with early treatment starting before the age of three, children have a better chance of leading independent lives.
The rise in autism diagnoses in Türkiye mirrors global trends, with the United States reporting similar rates. Experts urge parents to prioritize early screenings and involve families in therapy for better outcomes.
