In a landmark event at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Spiritual Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar emphasized the meditation necessity in today’s world. Addressing the inaugural session of the first-ever World Meditation Day, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar called meditation “mental hygiene” and highlighted its necessity in combating mental health challenges.
“Today, meditation is not a luxury as it was once thought. It is a necessity. Just like dental hygiene, mental hygiene through meditation helps us stay centered and free from aggression and depression,” he said.
The event, attended by over 600 participants and global dignitaries including President of the General Assembly Philemon Yang, featured a special meditation session by the Guru. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar underscored how meditation fosters sensitivity and sensibility, essential traits for a civilized society. He urged people to be mindful of themselves, others, and the environment.
The United Nations General Assembly recently declared December 21 as World Meditation Day, thanks to India’s active role in the unanimous adoption of the resolution. December 21, marking the Winter Solstice, is a significant day for meditation in Indian tradition and complements International Yoga Day on June 21.
This global recognition of meditation underscores its transformative potential for promoting peace and well-being amid worldwide conflicts and mental health crises.
