Allianz, in collaboration with the Sydney Phobia Clinic, has launched a new virtual reality (VR) therapy program aimed at helping people recover from psychological injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents. This innovative program is designed to assist individuals struggling with driving-related fears, a growing issue among those making insurance claims for car accidents.
According to Allianz, psychological injuries like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are becoming more common. Data from the company shows that psychological injuries made up 38% of its insurance claims in 2024, a sharp rise from 24% in 2020. Many accident survivors face mental health challenges, such as anxiety, which can make it difficult to return to driving or daily life.
The new VR therapy helps patients face their fears in a safe, controlled environment. Participants take part in realistic driving simulations that help them rebuild confidence on the road. Over 100 people have already participated in this pilot program, and the results have been very positive. One participant, Kim, shared how the therapy helped her overcome PTSD and get back behind the wheel after a serious accident.
Allianz is the first insurance company in Australia to use VR technology to treat driving-related phobias. After the success of the pilot program, Allianz plans to expand the therapy to more people, including rural and regional customers, using a smartphone-based VR platform called oVRcome.
This groundbreaking program offers a new way to address mental health challenges after accidents and helps people regain their independence and confidence.
