  • Suicide survivor Ayush shared his depression story and how he overcame his mental condition and suicidal tendencies.
  • Anyone dealing with suicidal tendencies should consult with a psychotherapist for medical support, Mental Health Foundation suggests.

According to a 2014 study, people with a mental illness are more likely to choose suicide as a way to end their psychological distress. The study reported a 34% prevalence of mental disorders in suicide decedents in India.

Ayush Maheswari, a 29-year-old corporate employee, shared with MIndHelp how he suffered from chronic depression during his university days and attempted suicide after not being able to overcome the situation. It was 2015 when Ayush got admission into a reputed university in Bangalore. He shared that he had never been outside his hometown before.

The university environment and the social culture were not similar to what he witnessed in his hometown. Due to his study concerns, he had to apply for university hostel accommodation. After he shifted to a hostel room, he realized that it would be extremely difficult for him to adjust to such an atmosphere. “It was truly a cultural shock and induced anxiety. I had trouble making friends, I used to dine alone and go out alone for a long time,” Ayush said.

Being an introvert, he spent two years of his university life without any genuine friends. In 2017, he got his first job placement in Bangalore. But his anxiety kept on growing and his psychological condition started creating barriers in the path of his professional growth.

For the past four years, Ayush was in a long-distance relationship with his childhood friend. He was also struggling with his relationship as it became extremely toxic and mentally abusive over time. He shared that his parents and close friends warned him a few times, but despite seeing all the red flags he chose to continue the relationship.

When that girl broke up with Ayush, he couldn’t bear the stress. He experienced loneliness and gradually started developing depression symptoms. He had no one to share his problems and being helpless, he decided to end his life one day. “I got admitted to the hospital, got my parents worried, and everyone else in my life,” Ayush shared with MindHelp.

He got proper therapy and counseling when he was in the hospital. He started feeling a little better after several months of therapy sessions, antidepressants, and more counseling from his friends and family. “I realized nobody in this world is worth my life. Slowly, I started seeing my relationship with my family and friends improve. Now, I am able to handle my issues without inducing anxiety,” Ayush shared. He later mentioned that practicing mindfulness has brought a huge positive change in his life.

According to Mental Health Foundation experts, people who suffer from suicidal thoughts should discuss their mental issues with someone they trust and consult with a therapist immediately.
