Brain News: A study claimed that daily consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages during childhood can impair learning and memory function.

A recent study by a University of Georgia faculty member in collaboration with a University of Southern California research group has shown in a rodent model that a high intake of sugar in adolescence causes changes in the gut bacteria, inducing learning and memory impairment during adulthood.

Children are the highest consumer of sugar-rich diets and early life sugar increases the level of bacteria called Parabacteroides. The research found that higher the Parabacteroides levels, the worse the animals performed in the task. The bacteria is alone sufficient to impair memory in the same way as sugar as well as induce other types of memory functions.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a joint publication of the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and of Health and Human Services, recommends limiting added sugars to less than 10 percent of calories per day.
