A team of researchers at the TU Dresden explored how eye movements reveal about us. The study is published in the journal PLOS ONE.
The Study
The researchers seated the participants in a dimly illuminated, sound-attenuated room and instructed them to duplicate a 3D model of Rubik’s Cube into a 2D pattern.
Their eye movement patterns were measured. The participants then completed a retrospective query where they described their experiences, over the course of the experiment, in great detail. All data analyses were carried out using MATLAB R2021b and R.
The Findings: Gazes Reveal What You Are
The results revealed that eye movement patterns during task performance and task-solving strategy reveal information about how we process information.
One of the lead researchers, Sebastian Pannasch, elaborated: “Our results show that the eyes are not only a proverbial mirror of the soul, but actually and measurably provide information about what we are currently engaged in and what goals we are pursuing within a task. Eye movements could be an indicator of the state of attention during task processing. In further studies, we will therefore investigate whether these new findings can be used to organize screen work.”
