Members of the Oxbow Marino Deck of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS), commonly known as the Pyrate Confraternity, have voiced deep concerns regarding the escalating rates of depression and mental illness among adolescents in society.

During a medical outreach organized by the NAS, Mr. Ebi Ayerite, the Convener and Capoon of the Oxbow Marino Deck, emphasized the disturbing increase in the number of adolescents struggling with depression and mental imbalances as they transition into adulthood.

The Speakers Urged To Focus On Mental Illness Among Adolescents

The medical outreach event, held at the Community Primary School in Central Epie, Yenagoa, the state capital, operated under the theme: “Promoting Good Mental Health in Adolescence: A Catalyst for Successful Transition from Childhood to Adulthood.”

Its primary objective was to foster good mental health among adolescents while shedding light on common mental health challenges they face, including depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Approximately 100 students and four teachers from Central Epie Secondary School, Opolo-Epie, participated in this impactful event.

The occasion featured distinguished guest speakers from various fields, including Dr. Oru Inetsol from the Department of Internal Medicine at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri-Yenagoa; Frank Akpojisheri Ogheneochuko from the Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing Sciences at Niger Delta University; and Ene Deriateide Efere, Vice Principal Academics at Bayelsa State School of Nursing Tombia.

The speakers urged parents, teachers, and adolescents to remain vigilant in identifying signs of these mental health challenges, encouraging open dialogue and seeking assistance when necessary.

They stressed the critical importance of recognizing these issues early to prevent them from escalating into adulthood.

Additionally, they called on the management of tertiary and secondary institutions of learning in the state to provide practical tools for maintaining good mental health among students and teachers.

These tools include allowing students and teachers to engage in regular physical activity to manage stress, establishing a healthy daily routine, promoting mindfulness, limiting screen time, addressing emotions openly, setting realistic goals, practicing effective time management, moderating caffeine and sugar intake, and seeking professional help when necessary.

Participants at the event expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Oxbow Marino Deck of the National Association of Seadogs and Mr. Ebi Ayerite for organizing this insightful outreach.

They pledged to integrate the valuable lessons learned into their daily lives and to actively spread awareness about the significance of promoting good mental health among adolescents.

In conclusion, the NAS, through its Oxbow Marino Deck, has taken a commendable step in addressing the pressing issue of adolescent mental health.

By organizing the medical outreach event and engaging with students and teachers, they have not only raised awareness but also provided practical guidance on how to navigate the challenges of adolescence while safeguarding mental well-being.

It is initiatives like these that can make a substantial difference in the lives of young individuals and the broader community.
