Joe Biden Directs $2.5B to Deal with Mental Health and Addiction Crisis

Recently, it has been reported that President Joe Biden is regulating $2.5 billion in funding to approach the nation’s intensified mental health conditions and addiction crisis.

What makes this initiative imperative for Biden is the fact that he has always given utmost priority to confronting the rising mental health crisis, even if its primary focus is opposing the broader COVID-19 pandemic. The funding has been designed to improve access to services for individual Americans. Also, the amount will be divided into two halves by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

$1.65 billion will go to the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant. It will enable the receiving states and provinces to upscale already-existing treatment infrastructure and build better prevention and treatment programs. $825 million will be allotted through a Community Mental Health Services Block Grant program. This amount will be used by the states to deal particularly with mental health treatment services.

A survey was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year in August 2020. It exhibited that 41% of U.S. adults struggled with mental health or substance abuse, in regards to the pandemic or safety measures like social distancing.
