Having Coffee 30 minutes Before Workout Burns Fat Faster, Says New Study

Health News: The journal International Society of Sports Nutrition reports that having caffeine (about 3 mg/kg) or a strong cup of coffee half an hour before aerobic exercise increases the rate of fat burning.

The most common recommendation is to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning to increase the burning of fat. But, there is a lack of clear scientific evidence to this. According to the authors of the study, the effects of caffeine are higher when performing workouts in the afternoon rather than in the morning.

Scientists from the Department of Physiology of the University of Granada hired 15 men (with an average age of 32). They consumed green coffee (or placebo dissolved in water at 8 am and 5 pm) 3 milligrams for every kilogram of their body weight) and rested for 30 minutes before starting a cycling exercise. They completed the test four times at 7-day intervals. The researchers standardized the conditions before each test.

When compared to placebo, coffee increased fat oxidation by 29% in the afternoon and 10.7% in the morning. The coffee also increased the intensity of the exercise by 13% in the afternoon and 11% in the morning. Also, the maximum oxygen uptake was higher in the afternoon.

The research team concludes that a combination of acute caffeine intake and aerobic exercise at moderate intensity in the afternoon is perfect for burning fat faster during physical exercise.
