  • Mental Health Awareness Month is celebrated every year, in May, to raise mental health awareness and reduce stigma.
  • Experts opine on the need to have a “mental health calendar” to encourage people to prioritize their mental well-being.

Mental Health And Awareness

Mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being. It refers to the state of our psychological and emotional well-being.

Mental health awareness is essential in our society because it helps us understand the importance of taking care of our mental health. It also helps us recognize the warning signs and symptoms of mental health disorders and seek help when needed.

The Challenges Of Mental Health Awareness

Despite the importance of mental health awareness, several challenges hinder progress in this area—including:

  • Stigma and discrimination associated with mental health issues
  • Lack of awareness and understanding of mental health issues
  • Limited access to mental health services
  • Limited funding for mental health research and initiatives
  • Insufficient mental health professionals

A Calendar To Promote Mental Health Awareness?

Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall health and well-being and should be prioritized on an ongoing basis.

However, having a designated day or month to focus on mental health can help raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. It can also provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations to come together to promote mental health and encourage people to seek help if needed.

In fact, having a yearly calendar to celebrate mental health can be a helpful tool in promoting mental health awareness and encouraging people to prioritize their mental health.

This calendar can include events, campaigns, and resources that focus on mental health, and can be a reminder to people to take care of their mental health throughout the year. Some important mental health-related dates celebrated across the world include:

  • March 1st – Self-Injury Awareness Day
  • March 30th – World Bipolar Day
  • April – Stress Awareness Month
  • May – Mental Health Awareness Month
  • June – Men’s Health Month
  • September 10th – World Suicide Prevention Day
  • October 10th – World Mental Health Day
  • November 13th – World Kindness Day

Why Do We Celebrate Mental Health Month?

Mental Health Awareness Month is observed every May to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and to promote access to mental health resources.

This month-long observance was started in 1949 by Mental Health America (MHA), a nonprofit organization that aims to support mental health and well-being in America. The main goal of Mental Health Awareness Month is to break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourage people to seek help if they need it.

Several projects have been launched to raise awareness and promote mental health. For instance, in the UK, the campaign Heads Together was launched by the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to promote mental health awareness.

The Trevor Project in the US is a nonprofit organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ young people.

Similarly, To Write Love On Her Arms, the US, is a nonprofit organization that aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and provide support for those struggling with mental health disorders.

Another significant initiative is the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP), a program that aims to improve access to mental health services in low- and middle-income countries.

Mental health awareness is vital in our society, and it’s essential to promote it through different initiatives. A mental health awareness calendar can be a useful tool to remind people of the importance of prioritizing their mental health and seeking help when needed.

By breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting access to mental health resources, we can improve the well-being of our society as a whole.
