Researchers at the Oregon State University examined the damaging effects of blue light exposure on human health. The study is published in the journal npj Aging.
The Study
The researchers studied blue light’s effect on the mitochondria in the cells of common fruit flies. They examined the survival rate of the flies kept in darkness and in environments with blue light exposure from LED sources. The darkness-to-light transitions occurred at different ages of the flies—at 2, 20, 40, and 60 days, respectively.
The Findings
The results revealed that prolonged exposure to blue light affects longevity. It was also found that the harmful effects of blue light exposure worsen with age.
In fact, blue light exposure (from household fixtures, phones, computers, etc.) is increasingly considered a risk factor for sleep and circadian disorders, impaired motor abilities, and brain damage.
