What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental, cognitive, and behavioral condition characterized by attention deficiency and hyperactivity. Recent studies reveal that 18.3% of the global population, both children and adults, suffer from ADHD to various degrees.

What Are The Symptoms Of ADHD?

The common symptoms of ADHD include hyperactivity and a lack of attention. These may also be accompanied by other signs, such as:

  • Aggression
  • Impulsivity
  • Irritability
  • Persistent repetition of words or actions
  • Absent-mindedness
  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Forgetfulness
  • Mood swings
  • Presence of mental disorders

ADHD And Mental Health

Research shows that ADHD persists throughout a person’s lifetime and, if not effectively managed, can hamper his/her social, academic, and professional domains of life. People with ADHD also experience poor mental health and substance abuse disorders.

However, this claim has been recently refuted by a 2022 study by the University of Toronto that stated that two in five (almost 42% of) adults with ADHD have excellent mental health. In fact, the lead author, Esme Fuller-Thomson, added that this mental health news “provides a very hopeful message for both individuals struggling with ADHD and their loved ones” when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD.

Measures To Address ADHD-Related Mental Health Issues

According to experts, the mainstay of ADHD treatment is pharmacological therapy. This is often supplemented by psychosocial treatment and training methods, such as:

  • Cognitive-behavioral training programs
  • Stress management techniques
  • Mindfulness training activities
  • Group therapy
  • Relaxation activities like yoga, meditation, etc.
  • Neurofeedback
  • Cerebellar training
  • Attention or memory training
  • Classroom or educational remediation
  • Psychoeducation

ADHD is a complex but common disorder that mostly affects children and youth. Thankfully, many ADHD treatment methods are available that can help a person effectively manage his/her ADHD symptoms and live a normal and happy life.

Even ADHD patients with flourishing mental health can benefit from targeted care and customized treatment plans.
