A team of researchers at Auckland Business School analyzed the stress of moving houses. The study is published in the journal Urban Science.

The Study

The researchers surveyed data from the New Zealand Government’s Integrated Data Infrastructure. They used the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) to examine the effects of moving house on mental well-being and stress.

The Findings

The results revealed that moving houses is stressful and detrimental to our wellness. One-off movement in what is otherwise a sustainable housing practice, frequent shifting of houses may lead to chronic stress and related mental health conditions.

The authors added: “We advanced our understanding of the stress of moving homes; the influence of mobility on place experience; and the circumstances, advantages, and challenges of moving home over a resident’s lifetime.
