Health News – Study found a significant association between coffee or tea consumption and lower risk of stroke and post-stroke dementia.

In a new study, researchers at the Tianjin Medical University examined 365,682 participants from the UK Biobank recruited between 2006-2010 and followed them until 2020. The participants were asked to report their coffee and tea consumption. Around 5079 participants developed dementia and 10,053 had at least one stroke over the study period.

The study findings showed that participants who consumed 2-3 cups of coffee or 3-5 cups of tea daily, or a combination of 4-6 cups of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea regularly, experienced the lowest incidence of stroke or dementia.
Additionally, people who drank 2-3 cups of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea regularly had a 32% lower risk of stroke and a 28% reduced risk of dementia than those who drank neither tea nor coffee. According to the research result, coffee consumption was also linked to a lower risk of post-stroke dementia.
“Our findings suggested that moderate consumption of coffee and tea separately or in combination were associated with lower risk of stroke and dementia,” said Yuan Zhang, lead author of the study published in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine.
