In 2020, author and motivational speaker Zoe Burnett took to the TEDxBrayfordPool stage to share her mental health recovery journey. She shared with her audience her misdiagnosis of atypical anorexia nervosa and how it impacted her mental wellness.

She critically analyzed weight issues and the shortcomings of body weight and BMI measurements, as well as highlighted the need to embrace holistic treatments of mental health disorders, especially eating disorders.

Zoe Burnett’s struggles with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts and behavior made their way to Twitter recently. In a widely circulated post, she uploaded a selfie of herself at a party, holding a glass of wine and appearing happy.

However, she revealed that this photo was taken just before her suicide attempt over four years ago, thereby exposing the disparity between her outward appearance and internal turmoil. She went on to discuss her ongoing mental health recovery journey, attributing her survival to the quick thinking of a friend.

In her post, Burnett wrote, “Just over 4 years ago, I tried to end my life. Tw. Sui*ide I repost this picture every year, this was the last picture taken of me before my attempt. I look so happy, carefree & full of life. What many did not realize was how much I was raging a war with myself.”

She went on to describe her self-loathing, healing, and acceptance of herself. She said: “For all those struggling, I know it is a cliche but do hold on. Talk to … those you love and keep communicating. You never know what your life could look like in a few years’ time. I am so pleased I failed.

The Twitter post garnered significant attention, with over 23,000 likes, and prompted many others to share their own stories of overcoming mental health challenges. The response was overwhelmingly supportive, with one user expressing gratitude for Burnett’s openness and sharing their own journey of hope and psychological resilience.

The Pitfalls Of Misdiagnosing Mental Health Disorders

The misdiagnosis of mental health disorders can have detrimental consequences for individuals and their well-being. It can lead to ineffective treatment plans, unnecessary medication, and prolonged suffering.

Misdiagnosing mental health conditions can exacerbate symptoms, worsen the overall condition, and delay the implementation of appropriate interventions. Moreover, misdiagnosis can contribute to a sense of frustration, confusion, and hopelessness for individuals seeking help, as they may struggle to understand their own experiences and receive the necessary support.

A Note On Failed Suicide Attempts And Mental Health Recovery

The story of how Zoe Burnett struggles with mental health issues highlights how failed suicide attempts can be pivotal moments in an individual’s mental health recovery journey. Surviving such an experience often serves as a turning point, leading individuals to seek help, support, and a renewed sense of purpose.

It provides an opportunity for reflection, self-discovery, and a chance to address the underlying issues contributing to their distress.

Through therapy, medication, and the support of loved ones, individuals can rebuild their lives, develop coping mechanisms, and find hope for the future.

While the road to mental health recovery is challenging, those who have experienced failed suicide attempts can serve as beacons of resilience, inspiring others to hold on, seek help, and believe in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow.
