According to Dr.Chandrika Anand, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common yet complex hormonal disorder among Indian Women, with a prevalence of 3-22%. She mentioned that almost 10% of adults and 20% of adolescents are currently suffering from this disorder. Though the exact causes are still unknown, genetics, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices can contribute to the development of this disorder, as mentioned in Times of India.

Depression and anxiety are the two most distressing symptoms of PCOS as it gradually weakens a person and makes it difficult for them to seek medical support, said Dr. Anand, Director of PCOS center, FOGSI India. She stated that the prevalence of depression and anxiety among women with PCOS in India is 28-64% and 34-57% respectively. Even the suicide rates are seven times greater in women with PCOS, as compared to 19% of those without it.

She even mentioned that PCOS patients are 12% and 27% more likely to suffer from eating disorders and social phobia that may cause them several social, psychological, medical, occupational difficulties. Additionally, it can negatively affect the sexual life of the patients as well.

Dr. Anand explained that women with PCOS tend to suffer from depression because of a variety of reasons. PCOS patients often experience infertility issues, excessive weight gain, and many dermatological symptoms that can have an adverse impact on a person’s mental wellbeing. Another common symptom of PCOS is long-term inflammation that increases the cortisol level, followed by stress and depression.

She later suggested that every woman with PCOS should be screened for depression by a certified psychologist. Apart from medication, some lifestyle modifications like exercise, yoga, meditation, healthy diet can help an individual to manage their PCOS symptoms.
