Teen Girls’ Mental Health

Adolescence is a time of overwhelming changes. This phase also brings with it great vulnerability to poor mental health, especially in teenage girls.

Research shows that teenage girls are struggling with mental illnesses that impact their daily functioning and social relationships. The prevalent mental health conditions in this age group include:

  • Depression
  • Body image issues
  • Eating disorders
  • Sleep disorders
  • Social anxiety
  • Internet addiction
  • Low self-esteem
  • Self-harm
  • Suicidal tendencies

Cause Of Poor Mental Health And Sadness In Teen Girls

Teen girls may sometimes experience a wide range of emotional challenges, including feelings of sadness and violence. These feelings can be attributed to a variety of factors, including:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Peer pressure
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Negative experiences like childhood abuse, parental abandonment, sexual or physical abuse, grief, etc.

Risks Of Violence And Trauma In Teenage Girls

When teen girls experience sadness, it can be characterized by feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, or a lack of purpose.

They may also experience feelings of worthlessness or guilt, which can be exacerbated by social media and the pressure to present a perfect image online. These feelings can lead to depression and anxiety, which can be difficult to manage on their own.

At the same time, teen girls can also experience violent tendencies that manifest as aggressive behavior towards others or even self-harm. A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributed this rising wave of violence and depressive symptoms to underlying emotional trauma or a lack of emotional support from family and friends.

Social media can also contribute to these tendencies by exposing teens to violent or negative content, leading to a desensitization to violence. In the most severe cases, this self-harm can manifest into suicidal ideation and execution.

Addressing Mental Health Issues In Adolescent Girls

The rising rates of self-harm and suicide in teenage girls highlights the importance in recognizing the signs of poor mental health and seeking help early.

This can involve talking to a trusted adult, seeking professional help from a mental health provider, and taking steps to improve overall well-being, such as getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, and practicing stress-reducing activities such as mindfulness and meditation.

Most importantly, parents, guardians, and trusted adults should provide a safe and supportive environment and help to address any underlying issues contributing to violence and sadness among teen girls.

This also includes providing the resources they need to overcome these obstacles and holding healthy conversations around mental health.
