A team of researchers at the Medical Council on Alcohol explored the cognitive benefits of quitting alcohol. The study is published in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism.

The Study

The researchers surveyed 32 participants suffering from severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) with the assessments, BEARNI 8 ± 2 days after alcohol cessation (T1) and BEARNI 18 ± 2 days after alcohol cessation (T2).

The Findings

The results revealed that quitting alcohol can improve cognition in just 18 days’ time. Even brief abstinence from alcohol results in better memory, verbal fluency, and visuospatial function.
