A team of researchers at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology explored how moderate and intense physical activity enhances sleep quality. The study is published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The Study

The researchers used an iso-temporal substitution approach to replace 60 minutes of sedentary behavior or light physical activity with intense or moderate exercise in the schedule of 683 Japanese adults aged 40–64 years.

An accelerometer monitored the participants’ level of physical activity and a questionnaire was used to assess the participants’ quality of sleep and rest.

The Findings

The results highlighted the importance of physical activity in promoting good quality and quantity of sleep. In fact, exercise-induced sound sleep was found to reduce the risks of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, mental health conditions, memory disorders, and sleep-related disorders (like insomnia, narcolepsy, etc.).

The authors added: “This study contributes to the existing pool of studies that provide empirical evidence of the importance of physical activity in promoting good-quality sleep. Hopefully, these studies will serve as a useful platform for further research on the prevention of sleep-related disorders.
