Researchers at the American Academy of Neurology studied the link between hypothyroidism and dementia. The study is published in the journal Neurology.

The Study

To understand how thyroid problems lead to dementia, the researchers surveyed the health records of 7,843 people newly diagnosed with dementia in Taiwan. They looked into the participants’ history of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

They adjusted factors like sex, age, high blood pressure, diabetes, medication use, etc. The results were then compared to surveys undertaken with people who did not have dementia.

The Findings

The results revealed that thyroid dysfunction and dementia are closely related. In fact, it was found that older adults with hypothyroidism and those who took medication for hypothyroidism were at an increased risk of dementia.

One of the lead authors, Chien-Hsiang Weng, elaborated: “While more studies are needed to confirm these findings, people should be aware of thyroid problems as a possible risk factor for dementia and therapies that could prevent or slow irreversible cognitive decline.”
