  • Laid-off Google’s Mental Health Manager took to LinkedIn to highlight the mental health consequences of sacking in the corporate world.
  • While her post exposed how the layoffs impacted mental health of former employees, she concluded her post with gratitude.

Google’s announcement in January of its decision to lay off 12,000 employees sent shock-waves throughout the industry. This move which saw Google cut jobs was particularly surprising considering the tech giant’s reputation for providing exceptional benefits and being an aspirational company for many in the tech industry. However, the company has attributed job cuts to the effort to streamline costs.

While some former Google employees explored alternative job opportunities using various online platforms, others took to sharing their personal experiences of being let go. Among the casualties of layoffs was long time Google’s Mental Health Manager who had dedicated a decade of service to the company.

In a poignant LinkedIn post, the ex-Google employee recounted the convergence of her second maternity leave and the end of her tenure at Google. She expressed, “Last week my second mat leave ended and with that, my role at Google. Earlier this year, I was made redundant along with thousands of others.”

Due to her maternity leave, Google’s Mental Health Manager had more time to process the shock of the layoffs compared to her colleagues. Describing the layoff notification as an unexpected twist, she emphasized her determination to transform the situation into something positive.

Reflecting on her time at the company, the former Google’s Mental Health Manager conveyed, “After 10 years at a company that has always given me so much, the redundancy email was a major plot twist. This is not how I wanted my time at Google to end, but now that it has happened, I’m determined and excited to turn this into something positive.”

Grateful for the opportunities she had, she mentioned the valuable experience she gained from her roles in operations and wellbeing, as well as her involvement with Google Books, Google Movies & TV, and, most significantly, Mental Health & Wellbeing.

Additionally, she expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the memories and connections forged with the remarkable individuals she had the privilege of crossing paths with during her tenure. While her post exposed how Google layoffs impacted mental health of former employees, she concluded her post with a heartfelt thank you.

More recently, Google made headlines again with its decision to lay off employees within its Waze mapping app as it integrates the app into Google Maps products. Chris Philips, the head of Google’s Geo unit, communicated this news to the affected employees via email.

In response to inquiries, Google provided a statement to Reuters, explaining, “In order to create a better, more seamless long-term experience for Waze advertisers, we’ve begun transitioning Waze’s existing advertising system to Google Ads technology. As part of this update, we’ve reduced those roles focused on Waze Ads monetization.”
